Everyone has their own opinions and definition.
How can Lean be so popular if we can't even agree on a definition and how can we believe Lean to be a powerful force for good if we can't explain what it is?
Here's an idea, Lean is like chili.
No, really. Here's what I mean...
There are about as many notions of what makes a great bowl of chili as there are of what makes a successful Lean organization. Most people have their favorite opinions and some are even prepared to defend it to the death! But it's that passion and diversity in the chili community that make chili cook offs so much fun.
Every one has their own favorite chili with a great variety of ingredients and flavors. Everyone has their own recipes, most of which have been continuously improved for years.
And the dispute is never fully resolved. A final victory is never settled upon. And according to chili aficionado Wayne Preston Allen, that's what makes it so special.
So Lean community - sit down, have a bowl of chili, and embrace a little bit of the uncertainty about Lean.
